Missed-Call Text-Back for UK Tradespeople: What It Costs and Where It Falls Short

Short answer: missed-call text-back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you miss. They know you've seen it. They don't ring the next plumber. It's cheap. It works for mobile callers. It doesn't answer anything, and it's useless if you never ring back.

I'll spare you the long bullshit version.

If you're a one-man or one-van outfit, a missed call feels like watching money drive past. Fair enough. Here's exactly how this works and where it doesn't.

What it does

You're under a sink. The phone rings. You can't get to it. Seconds later the caller gets a text:

Sorry, we missed your call, we're on a job. We'll ring you back by 5pm. If it's easier, reply with your postcode and what the problem is.

That's all. No robot voice. No app to download. They know they've been heard. They can send you the details.

Why bother

People ring a few firms and book whoever answers first. A survey of 220 UK tradespeople by Fix Radio, quoted by TradeCall24, found 60% struggle to answer while working. 34% said they'd lost work because they couldn't pick up.

Small survey. And TradeCall24 sells call answering. So treat it as a hint, not gospel. You already know what an unanswered call costs. I've run businesses. Missed enquiries hurt.

What it costs in the UK

M1 Studio's comparison (prices as shown 30 September 2026) lists UK services from about £6.49 a month for 50 texts, up to about £97 a month for plans that add an AI text chat. Some charge a few pence per text on top.

Ask these before you pay:

  • What's counted? Texts, conversations or leads.
  • What happens at the limit? Stops, or charges extra.
  • Whose name is on the text? Yours, or a random number.
  • Where do replies go? Pick the one you'll actually check.
  • Contract? VAT? Most say no contract. Many don't say if VAT is included.

Setup is the other cost. Most self-serve apps need you to divert unanswered calls to a new number. A few minutes on most UK networks. If you can't be arsed, that's what done-for-you setup is for.

Where it falls short

Read this bit. It's the useful part.

  1. It only reaches mobiles. An agent ringing from an office line, or a customer on a landline, gets nothing. (Source)
  2. It doesn't answer anything. Water coming through the ceiling needs an answer now. "We'll ring you later" can send them to someone else. For emergencies you may want a person, or an AI receptionist as well.
  3. Replies need an owner. If customers text back and you never read it, you've built another inbox to ignore.
  4. Keep the text to information. The ICO says a service message, like an appointment reminder, isn't direct marketing. Add a promotion and it is. Keep the reply to "got your call, here's what happens next".
  5. Not every missed call is a customer. Ofcom warns about a scam where an unknown number rings once, hoping you'll call back a premium-rate line. Ask any provider if it texts every missed number. Don't ring back strangers who left no message.

Is it worth it for you?

Do this now. Open your call log. Count last week's missed calls from numbers you don't know. How many were probably real enquiries? What's an average job worth to you?

If one recovered job a month covers the plan, it pays for itself. If you almost never miss a call, skip it.

The bit people skip

The text buys you time. It doesn't win the job. Make your own rule: "I ring everyone back by [time]." Then keep it. A great text with no callback is worth nothing.

What I don't know

I don't know how many of your missed calls are real jobs. Only your call log tells you. I also haven't tested every service on that price list, so I'm not ranking them.

Quick FAQ

Does it work with my existing number? Usually, by diverting unanswered calls. Check with the provider.

Can I write my own message? Most let you. Keep it short and in your voice.

Will customers think it's spam? Not if it arrives fast, names your business and refers to the call they just made.

Do I need to be technical? No. If you can change a phone setting, you can do it.

I sell missed-call text-back setup, so I'm not neutral. I don't invent stats, testimonials or results. If I've got something wrong, get in touch using the form above.
